Even the toughest superheroes have a soft side. In Fancy Crew, Johnny Romeo portrays Batman in an unusual moment of vulnerability as he cradles a feline companion in his arms. Through the subtle interplay of colours, reminiscent of the original Joker, the artwork encapsulates the complexity of Batman's psyche, exploring themes of emotional resilience and connection amidst the neon-drenched darkness of Romeo’s Kitsch Pop Gotham City. Despite his stoic reputation, the Dark Knight's stern expression betrays a glimpse of empathy, hinting at the inner turmoil masked by his stoicism. The symbol of the cat ingeniously mirrors Batman's emotional restraint, referencing the cat’s tendency to hide their pain for as long as possible to not draw the attention of predators. Romeo builds on the duality between bat and cat, stoicism and vulnerability through the word assemblage ‘Stray Stay Stoic’. With its initial nod to the ‘stray’ cat featured in the painting, the textual shift to ‘Stay Stoic’ strikes at the core of Batman’s humanity. Far from the hardened, emotionally distant superhero we know him as, Batman is a deeply empathetic human being who chooses to be extremely guarded because he feels too much for the people around him. On a lighter note, the painting’s title Fancy Crew cleverly alludes to the relationship between Batman and Gotham’s finest feline femme fatale, Catwoman. In particular, Romeo pays homage to the nicknames that Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Bruce Wayne have for each when they are out of their costumes – Cat and Bat.
