Levi Hawken
Levi Hawken is a New Zealand artist whose work bridges the gap between urban street culture and studio fine art. His creative practice is shaped by his background in skateboarding, mid-1990s Auckland graffiti, and concrete masonry.
After years of dealing with the temporary nature and strict unwritten rules of street graffiti, Hawken transitioned into the studio to create permanent art. His paintings, drawings, and sculptures serve as lasting "keepsakes" of his fleeting public works. Driven by a skateboarder's appreciation for architecture, his recent multi-layered concrete sculptures explore scale, shadow, and the contrast between gritty textures and Brutalist forms. These versatile sculptures are built to exist anywhere, from galleries and gardens to the very city streets that inspired them.
