Based on a small bay in Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough, New Zealand, I was fascinated by the silvery nature of the water. Then on closer observation I also became interested in how the swells in the sea overlap in a variety of directions. On my various yacht passages across the Pacific I also observed these patterns at close quarters and how the yacht responded to the natural phenomenon. So with this visual connection and the more visceral experience out on the ocean, these confluences, in all their subtlety, became an exciting challenge to render convincingly. The title Mer de Blanc – White Sea - refers to the nature of the water while also celebrating the Sauvignon Blanc grape produced in abundance in the Marlborough region.
