Susan Badcock
Susan Badcock is a photographer and painter based in Geraldine New Zealand. From a very creative family Susan has always been surrounded by art Her grandfather is landscape artist Douglas Badcock and her father portrait and landscape painter John Badcock.
Graduating from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art and Susan has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, specialising in photography. Susan has exhibited in NZ alongside photographers such as Anne Noble and Margaret Dawson also working as an assistant to acclaimed Australian photographer Anne Ferran.
Using traditional methods Susan hand paints still life photographs breathing colour into her still life compositions. The finished works are elegant and refined with an air of mystery and at times unease.
“I collect dead birds, freeze them and photograph them. I like glorifying things that are overlooked or discarded. I find things that are common or perhaps boring to the untrained eye — like crumpled paper chucked in the rubbish — and celebrate their forms and tones.”
