"The painting depicts Mt Erin Te Mata Rongokako. A place that I have painted many times and that has great significance to me as a sign of strength and permanence, within a changing landscape and a changing world. The “scars” on the land or slips resulting from the devastating Cyclone Gabrielle tell the story of the event and represent the loss and devastation that resulted, yet the permanence of the wider land forms reflect the resilience and stoicism of both the land and its inhabitants. Ultimately this painting represents the hope that even in the face of adversity, we can continue to prevail and progress while paying homage to our origins. These themes can be applied to not only the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle but also wider geopolitical issues that we have faced in recent times such as covid and personal growth and identity." - Freeman White⁠
