This oar is a document of a time, when in 1767 Captain Cooks the Endeavour first explored the Pacific. Aboard the ship was a botanist, Joseph Banks who came to record the flora and fauna. His encounters with Maori were varied and his drawings well documented. This oar is a symbol of these times and influenced by my love of nature and observing nature, but also a speaks of the beginning of change and colonial appropriation.
