The ‘Lovebirds’ series is an exploration of erotica through the use of Kōwhaiwhai patterns. Birds are important symbols in Māori culture, being the original inhabitants of Aotearoa and the descendents of Tāne. They can be seen as symbols of chiefly status, predictors of the future, Kaitiaki (guardians) and companions.
