Himiona Te Orinui was a Māori prophet, healer and a lifter of Mākutu who gathered a significant following in the Bay of Plenty during the 1880s. His movement came to be known as Pōkiha's Karakia. Deeply well-versed in the Bible, Te Orinui believed that the eruption of Mount Tarawera was divine retribution for the perceived wrongdoings of the local people.
