Dick Frizzell's newest screenprint, Diving Girls, extends a body of work that sits within a much larger New Zealand art historical tradition the fusing of the female form with the land itself, echoing the concept of Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother. Since works like Unconscious Woman (2003, now held in the Te Papa collection) and Reclining Woman (2006), Frizzell has taken this weighty convention and stripped it of pretension, rendering the female forms as landscapes resembling hills and valleys, utilising direct linework and flat colour in graphic screenprints. Diving Girls continues that lineage, panoramic and unmistakably Frizzellean.
