With the arrival of Europeans to Aotearoa, Māori sexual attitudes changed to a code of behaviour based on Victorian concepts of morality. This led to the active promotion of the belief that sexual behaviour should occur within the parameters of marriage and reserved only for procreation. Sexual organs in Māori carvings were often covered over or even removed as they were seen as being indecent and vulgar.
