This work explores themes, of love, sexuality and procreation through the use of Kōwhaiwhai patterns. The inspiration for this Kōwhaiwhai is Te Pitau-a-Manaia, which became widely recognised after being used by renowned carver, Raharuhi Rukupō in a church at Manutuke in 1849. The pattern was used to depict Tūpuna in a less-representational way so as not to offend missionaries, who thought traditional carvings of ancestors “obscene”.
