Made from plastic toys manufactured in New Zealand during the 1970s, What Goes On K’ Rd Goes Home takes something innocent, familiar and distinctly domestic, then lets it misbehave.
The figures are arranged in a playful, suggestive tangle. Part game, part performance.
There is something very New Zealand about the contrast. Polite on the surface, slightly wild underneath.
The title borrows from the mythology of Karangahape Road, a place associated with nightlife, sexuality, outsiders and freedom, then brings that energy back into the home.
These small mid-century toys were made for play. Here, decades later, they are still playing.
