Samuel Marsden's dream was to come to Aotearoa to bring Christianity to Maori. In 1814, he purchased a ship to sail to New Zealand from Australia. He preached the first Christian sermon in Aotearoa at Oihi Bay in 1814, fulfilling a prophecy given to the people of the Rangihoua Pā, which heralded the arrival of the gospel. This painting is on a woollen blanket, a metaphor for colonisation and Christianity.
