Ani Kaaro was a Maori prophetess from the Hokianga, who in the 1880s, spread the teachings of the Taranaki prophets Te Whiti and Tohu. She was mainly concerned with the injustices of the loss of land to the government and European settlers. She was a Matakite (visionary) with strong Christian convictions, who acted as a charismatic and responsible leader of her people.
