Tītokowaru was a Maori warrior and prophet, who would often turn away from war and seek peaceful solutions with the government over land issues. In 1879, after what has been described as his third conversion to peace, he decided to join Te Whiti and Tohu at Parihaka in Taranaki, protesting peacefully against land confiscation in the face of aggressive and injust colonial force.
