Aegis
Aegis explores the fragile nature of sanctuary. A sleeping stag rests in an open landscape while birds build and tend a nest held within its antlers. The animal’s stillness becomes a refuge; its body, unknowingly, becomes architecture.
The painting sits in the tension between protection and vulnerability. One creature’s rest allows another’s labour; one body’s exposure creates another’s shelter. The nest is safe, but precarious. The stag is powerful, but asleep. The birds are protected, but constantly working to maintain that protection.
The title, Aegis, refers to guardianship or shelter. Here, that guardianship is not grand or deliberate, but accidental, tender and unstable — a quiet image of interdependence, where safety is both given and borrowed.
