Freeman created this 'Earnslaw Sunset' painting in Freeman's studio during lockdown, using references from his own painting trips. The scene is the view from outside the Glenorchy Pub looking toward Mt Earnslaw (Pikirakatahi) in Mount Aspiring National Park- Freeman omitted some of the buildings in the foreground in an imagining of what this landscape would have looked like historically. It is one of his favourite paintings and these large South Island studio paintings are rare as Freeman is most well known for his landscapes and seascapes closer to home in Hawke's Bay.
